  • Three Orkney artists in the running for prestigious Highland Art Prize

Three Orkney artists are in the running for a prestigious prize that recognises artistic excellence from creatives working in the Highlands and Islands.

Local painters Jane Glue and Ingrid Grieve, and needlefelt artist, Helen Galland, have all submitted works for the Highland Art Prize with the support of membership body, Creative Orkney.

Organised by the Highland Society of London, in partnership with An Comunn Gàidhealach, McCallum Art House, Wasps, Cass Art and The Highland Soap Company, the prize aims to promote Highland art on a national scale and raise the profile of local artists working across the Highlands and Islands.

Together with a cash prize of £1,000, the winning artist will have the opportunity to mount a solo exhibition at The Briggait cultural hub in central Glasgow next year.

Judges for the 2025 Highland Art Prize are contemporary Scottish artist, Beth Robertson Fiddies, and Dr Donnie Munro, former Runrig frontman and now director of development, fundraising and the arts at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

The judges will select a shortlist of around 60 submitted works for a special exhibition at the McCallum Art House in Fort William from 10-18 October 2025, in conjunction with the Royal National Mòd, which this year takes place in Lochaber. The winning artist will be announced during the Mòd prize giving event on 17 October.

Kirsteen Stewart, project manager for Creative Orkney, said: “The Highland Art Prize seeks entries from local art associations or similar bodies across the Highland and Islands, so it represents a great opportunity for Creative Orkney to showcase the work of some of our talented members in a high-profile event. Needless to say, the works submitted by Jane, Ingrid and Helen are absolutely brilliant and we’re all very much looking forward to following their progress through the competition. If previous years are anything to go by, the standard for the competition will be extremely high but Orkney’s creatives always hold their own on the national stage!”
