You can sing but can you swing? How about attending a vocal jazz workshop with Pauline Black on Tuesday 18th March 2025 at 7.30pm-9pm in King Street Halls, Kirkwall

This workshop is suitable for all levels and styles of singer and particularly suitable for those singers who may not have much experience (or any) with regard to singing jazz. Topics covered will include rhythm, listening, jazz phrasing, different grooves, improvisation and performance technique. The workshop will focus on various jazz and swing standards and 12 bar blues. In the last part of the workshop participants will be given the opportunity to sing and ‘swing’ along with live jazz musicians.

Pauline Black is a singer, trumpet player and music educator who has recently relocated to Orkney from Aberdeen where she was Head of Music and Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. She sings in Ooomph! and Bailey & Black and since moving to Orkney various formations including Freilach and the FlatNiners. She has a particular interest in helping people find ways into jazz and improvising and has delivered workshops and talks about jazz in education across the UK. Whilst in Aberdeen she ran several big bands with singing groups. Now enjoying settling in as Deputy Principal at UHI Orkney she hopes to help build the jazz scene here.
