The first exhibition to open at the Pier Arts Centre this year celebrates some of Orkney’s youngest artists.
Peedie Pier – Primary and Junior Secondary School Artwork opens on Saturday 15 February and will be on display until 8 March.
The exhibition includes work made by pupils from primary and junior secondary schools throughout the county who are encouraged in their art-making by the specialist art teachers who bring their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to Orkney’s schools.
Selected by the art teachers, the work on display reflects the wide range of materials, skills and subject matter the children are encouraged to engage with during the school year.
Supporting and promoting Orkney’s young artists has been an integral part of the Pier Arts Centre’s activities since opening in 1979, with schools, graduates and open exhibitions a regular feature of the creative programme.
Miss Harcus, itinerant art teacher commented “It is a fantastic opportunity to bring Orkney Primary schools’ artwork together to share, showcase and celebrate what the peedie artists have been thinking, imagining, designing, creating and making. Presenting their works in such a beautiful professional space adds value and brings a broader audience to view their successes.”
There will be a special event for pupils, teachers, friends and family on Saturday 8 March at 2:30pm. Everyone is welcome!
Coming next: Bet Low - An Island on Your Doorstep 1 March-7 June 2025.
The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday-Saturday 10:30am-5pm. Admission is free.
