Women artists and the natural environment are the focus of one of the Pier Arts Centre’s new exhibitions this summer.
Inside Landscape - the natural environment observed by women artists opens on Saturday 17 June and will be on display until 19 August.
The exhibition highlights the work of 21 women artists who have been inspired by landscape. The group includes Pier Arts Centre collection artists alongside emerging artists living and working in Orkney.
Pier Arts Centre Curatorial Assistant Kari Adams commented “This exhibition celebrates how these artists have explored themes of landscape and revelled in the pleasure of looking. The Orkney landscape is a significant point of focus, represented in works by Sylvia Wishart and Margaret Tait, as well as in the work of emerging artists – including Ukrainian artist Alexandra Kadzevich who spent time in Orkney in 2019 as part of the British Council UK/Ukraine SWAP Residency.”
Inside Landscape charts the artists’ observations and how they have represented their surroundings in sensual, poetic, and striking ways.
The exhibition includes, paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, and film, and reveals how the artists have pushed the boundaries of traditional landscape painting and still life.
Artists in the exhibition include:
Sara Barker • Wilhelmina Barns-Graham • Louise Barrington • Cassia Dodman • Katy Dove • Jessie Flood-Paddock • Barbara Hepworth • Alexandra Kadzevich • Adela Kaluzinska • Bet Low • Kelly Marwick • Margaret Mellis • Rosalind Nashashibi • Mary Newcomb • Winifred Nicholson • Eva Rothschild • Margaret Tait • Tenant of Culture • India Whitwell • Sylvia Wishart • Sarah Wylie.
The Pier Arts Centre is currently open Monday to Saturday 10.30am-5pm. Admission is free.
